New Trails and New Trekking Poles!

Bassi Falls Trail

Exploring is part of the outdoor life! So are weather delays!

Since we were rained/snowed out last week, I decided to change things up!

I enjoy my favorite spots, just like anyone else, but part of loving the outdoors is visiting new places and expanding around your favorite spots. So today, we tried a new spot in the El Dorado NF, although not the one I had picked out at home on the couch! One of the fun things about the virtual life versus the real world are the inaccuracies! I originally picked out a nice paved trail next to Union Mine Res. Only to find the road to the trail closed for the winter. Closures are part of the reality of seasonal activities in current forest management.

So, I had to decide what to do next? Do we hike to the trail to hike the trail, or do we redo old trails, or find another one? Well, I decided to find a new one.

Right up the road we found an open road to a trail head to Bassi Falls. Having a Jeep allowed me to get us closer to the trail, since this road was not plowed and the snow had crusted over to a nice ice sheet.

The trail was mostly covered in a few inches of corn snow, making for a great hike! I am glad that we have a new sets of trekking poles! It made for a safer hike and the icy spots easier to pass over.  They are Cascade Mountain Tech Quick Lock Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles. They are fairly lightweight, super adjustable, comfortable, and the snow baskets came in very handy for this hike!

I did keep this hike short, since it was mostly downhill at the start and the uphill was going to be tough for me. Only a mile total, but my heart rate was high according to my Garmin Fenix! I will be doing longer hikes on this trail in the near future!

I love new gear! Did you ever get new gear and couldn’t wait to try it out?
