Homesteading where to start?

Homesteading where to start? The age old question!

So we’ve decided to start a new Homestead.  Moving to a different location is sometimes part of life. The southwest was great, but we need trees, not desert. The hard part with this transition is finding new land, and then carving out a little bit of the northwest forest for our homestead.

We have been looking for a place with some land for a while, and the “right” place has not yet appeared to us. This has left us in a holding pattern. So! Homesteading where to start when you don’t yet have your place? This is the biggest question for us today.

Obvously for me it is getting back in shape. Homesteading takes a lot of hard work on a daily basis. The work is very rewarding, but it is hard anyway. Over the last couple of years, I have neglected my fitness as a priority and now need to seriously improve. So workouts are where I need to start my homestead today! So, while staying with family, I try to do all the bigger jobs around their house and adding specific weight exercises to try and improve where I think I’m lacking. I’m hoping that when we do finally find land, I will be able to work for long stretches to feel good about the progress.

Where else can we improve before we find our homestead? Easy! Learn about gardening in the new location! Gardening is the simple first step to a self-sufficient homestead. So, I have been learning which vegtables, herbs, and fruit bearing trees do well in our new chosen location. It is also important to research the planting times, for we may be able to start some now and transport them in pots to the new homestead! Harvest times will also be slightly different in the new location, so different forcing techniques may need to be used and learned. Also, after the harvest, canning will be a big part of preserving the bounty, so learning any new canning hacks will be necessary.

Homesteading where to start? Is simply plan, learn, practice, and get fit!

Have you thought about moving and starting a new homestead?
