Using the RV as a power plant!

RV Solar Setup

I was thinking the other day that I have a great setup in the RV for our dry camping, but when we are parked at a park or in the driveway of our house it doesn’t do much to help us.  What if I can turn all that solar power into an RV Solar power plant when we are hooked into the grid? It turns out its easier than I thought.

We had a grid tied micro inverter system put on our last house and it was wonderful! We were always credited at the end of the year even though it was an all-electric house. However, we sold the house to move northward. I want to take any power that I make extra each day from the RV and sell it back to the power company just like we did on the old house. With our RV system we can!

I used Victron Energy components in my RV, but I know that other manufactures have the same abilities. I have a MultiPlus 3000VA inverter/charger with GX controller on a single-phase, dc-coupled system, and it will grid tie with the addition of a grid power meter. This will allow they system to feed back the power to whatever my shore power is plugged into. I will have to commission the system if tied directly to the power meter with the power company if I don’t already have to have a smart meter that has been enabled to log power in both directions. Obviously, this only makes sense if I’m stationary for long periods of time, or have a house or property with a meter already.

I’ve thought about this, because we are considering building a new house, possibly off grid. Although the RV system is not large enough for the house, it could supplement the power needs while it produces solar.

So, why not get the extra part and turn it into an RV solar power plant? I mean we already spent the money on the RV for the rest of it! From now on I will keep this in mind for any future RV’s so that I end up with a system that can be a power plant! That way no matter where I am, I have the ability to power a house or sell power back to the power company!

It seems like a win-win! So, look for more information here as we get settled up north!

Are you planning any solar upgrades to your RV or even making an RV solar power plant?
